New York Times has selected the Azores as one
its 52 Places to Go in 2019:
* Mystical green lushness,
oversize volcanic craters now turned into lakes, steaming natural hot springs
that puff out from the earth, blue hydrangeas by the thousands and the only
coffee growers in Europe distinguish the island chain.
* New restaurants.New
hotels.
Lonely
Planet rated the Azores #3 on its list of Best Regions in
the World 2017:
* It
is hard to imagine a place better suited to nature lovers, fans of adventure
sports, or anyone looking for a beacon of sustainability.
* They bear witness to the forces
forever shaping our planet. This is a world of fumaroles, mudpots and scalding
springs; of caverns, columns and grottoes formed from once molten rock; of blue
lakes ringed by forests of laurel and cedar, and green pastures patterning the
slopes of calderas.
* Azoreans seem intent on preserving their treasures – the
built environment covers just five per cent of the land; the rest is a patchwork
of protected areas and marine reserves. The regional government aims to produce
75% of the islands’ energy from renewables by 2018.

sophisticated as most have lived overseas.

Remote and temperate, the Azores remain lightly touristed. The ecosystem

from the beautiful hydrangea-covered hills of Flores to the
rock-bottomed bays of Terceira

is in great shape. Whales still a frequent sight. Local culture strong
and vibrant. Not uncommon to be welcomed into a communal meal during a festival.
